A Little History
The first Thornwood Park Concert Series, held in 2005, was organized by  Terri and Tony Lorenz.  After moving to Wilmette from downtown Chicago in July of 2002, one of the things they discovered they missed the most was the ability to walk to great outdoor events in the summer.  Many of their new friends in the neighborhood felt the same way, noting that virtually all community events were held on the east side of Wilmette which required a car or public transportation to access them.  As parents of small children can attest to, just getting to these events can be challenging!  Wouldn’t it be nice to just plop the kids in a stroller, a wagon, or a bike and head out for some summer fun!  Given the proximity and size of Thornwood Park, a family concert seemed like the perfect event to produce – requiring relatively little preparation and appealing to a wide variety of ages.
After presenting her idea to the Park District and receiving the okay to move forward, Terri pulled in three neighbors, and a small committee was formed.  They teamed up with Susan Gatto, another neighbor, who runs the Prairie Garden Project.*   The purpose of this Project is to enhance the natural beauty of the park by preserving its native flowers and grasses. The Thornwood Park Concert Series makes annual donations to the Prairie Garden Project when there are excess funds from the concert donations.

Excess funds are also used to purchase items for the park.   Two colorful picnic tables were purchased for the park along with our first concert in 2005.  One of these tables was funded entirely by a very generous donor and a memorial plaque is attached.

Fall 2010 brought about a new playground for Thornwood Park.  The new park design includes a conversion of the sand and wood chip bases to clean, safe rubberized surfaces and a sidewalk that connects all elements of the playground and complies with ADA requirements.  All of the outdated equipment was replaced with new and exciting
pieces including a track ride,  an infinity climbing loop, spinner bowl, spider web and swings.
The Friends of Thornwood Park raised just over $10,000.00 to help to cover the cost of the upgraded equipment.
We are always open to suggestions for ways in which to use these funds to further enhance our park.
